Campaign Finance Board, DemocracyNYC, the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit, and Department of Education Kick Off Student Voter Registration Trainings Across Five Boroughs Ahead of Civics Week 2020

Since the launch of student voter registration drives in 2015, tens of thousands of high school students have registered to vote for the very first time across high schools in New York City.
February 10, 2020 — The Campaign Finance Board, in partnership with DemocracyNYC, the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit, and the Department of Education, will host voter registration trainings for student leaders across the five boroughs. This is part of an effort to deploy a civics corps of students to assist their peers in getting civically engaged and registering to vote during Civics Week from March 2nd to the 9th.
Young voters cast ballots at unprecedented levels in the 2018 elections, yet turnout and registration rates, particularly for students of color from historically disenfranchised communities, remain stubbornly low in comparison with voting adults. These trainings are intended to revitalize a culture of civic engagement and participation to improve youth voter registration and turnout. Students who attend these training sessions will learn about voting patterns in NYC, voter registration best practices, and how to participate in the Civics Week student voter registration drive at their school.

NYC Votes is the nonpartisan voter engagement initiative of the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) and its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC). In addition to promoting voter registration, participation, and civic engagement in New York City through its many programs and partnerships, NYC Votes sponsors the city’s official Debate Program and produces the citywide Voter Guide.
The DemocracyNYC Initiative aims to increase voter registrations and civic engagement in New York City, while also empowering New Yorkers to be active, informed voters. DemocracyNYC was first announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio in his 2018 State of the City address, detailing a robust 10-Point Plan to make New York City the fairest, most civically engaged big city in America.
